City Directories
City directories are valuable historical data sources because they are often the only cost effective means of identifying past occupants of buildings over long periods of time. HIG’s city directory services are unique and highly valued by our clients because we supply you with the raw data necessary to make your own determination regarding historic property uses.
Format of HIG’s City Directories
- You will receive digital copies of the original city directory pages. Each page includes the date and publishers name. No details are missing or misinterpreted!
- HIG’s licensing agreements with the major city directory publishers allow our clients to include HIG’s City Directories in their reports.
- HIG's city directory collection contains directories from several publishers including Polk’s, Haines, Coles, and Donnelly's.
Research Parameters
- We provide city directory coverage for your site at approximate five year intervals.
- You may specify which streets you would like us to research or we will select the streets for you based on the information you provide and our review of current and/or historic maps of the site area.
- You may specify an address range for HIG to research. Additional research charges may apply for very long address ranges on one street; for example a long corridor project.
- An HIG Researcher will contact you if we discover conflicting or incomplete information regarding your site location and the streets to be researched.
- For many older cities, HIG has collected city directory coverage dating back to the 1890s.
- You may add additional streets to your city directory research for $20/street.
